What are the prerequisites for learning Sharepoint?

Believe it or not, answers to this question have a lot more variety than what you would think as is evidenced from this question over at LinkedIn answers

What's the right answer, you ask? Mine is always, "It depends"!

Let me qualify that further. Sharepoint as a tool and Sharepoint as a framework are *TWO DIFFERENT* things. Like I mentioned in my answer, depending on what you want to learn about Sharepoint, more importantly how you want to use it, you can look at various options. I am a big fan of experiential learning, so it is no surprise that I would advocate actually doing the things that you want to learn.

However, with Sharepoint, it is not as easy as it sounds. Since it is tightly coupled with different parts of the Windows Server System and SQL Server 2005 and uninformed changes CAN cause mayhem, it is incumbent upon any technical person to read up on how MOSS/WSS3.0 works before messing with it.

For those wanting to soak up MOSS trivia and knowledge, my links page has a pretty exhaustive set of online resources for your reading pleasure!

Cheers!

Some things I did not know about A.R Rahman

"Born A. S. Dileep Kumar, he changed his name to Allah Rakkha Rahman when he converted to Sufi Islam in his early 20s."

Catching up on NY Times, I came across this interesting piece on A.R Rahman, affectionately known as ARR. This may be common knowledge but I had no idea that he was born A.S Dileep Kumar and converted to Sufi islam. That explains why a part of his music has always appealed to me as I am a big fan of Sufi (kinda) music.

  A. R. Rahman is one of India’s most prolific film composers.

Sharepoint Server Flu? - What I learned in Sharepoint this week

I have heard of the flu but Sharepoint Server Flu? Sounded a little odd when I first read about it, but it turned out to be one of the most informative webcast I have ever attended!

A shout out at Shane Young over @ SharePoint911.com for putting together a superlative webcast that gave attendees quite a few tips. It was one of the few times I have attended a webcast where I felt like an hour was just not enough at the end of it.

I am going to wait until Shane posts about this on his blog before I start posting specifics! Hopefully, that won't be too long :)

Till then, you can amuse yourselves by reading this Sharepoint Admin white paper that a part of the presentation is based on if I am not mistaken.

Cheers!

SP Saturday Questions

Question: Is there an easy way to get a WCM site in MOSS 2007 without going through all the hoops that you showed us?

Answer: Yes and no. Yes, it is easy to set up a web app on an internal authoring (windows) zone and extend the zone to the Internet. The authoring of content is done by authenticated users and the internet zone is configured for anonymous access only. The reason I would go with no is because of the fact that this scenario is not designed for customization, branding or custom development.

Question: What is the best way to handle unstructures sharepoint development and content growth in my company?

Answer: There is no easy answer to this one. My recommendation is usually to engage with resources (internal or external) who understand the importance of planning, design and structure for an enterprise Sharepoint deployment. Sharepoint is a very powerful set of tools and as such requires a significant level of planning for any major deployment scenario. Too often, I have heard people share stories about how their company's "MOSS" project turned from a simple website with documents to a "sharepoint sprawl"

Sharepoint Saturday Presentation Slides

Continuing from my Sharepoint Saturday experience, I am posting a PDF version of my slides. Here is something cool you may not know about Office 2007, but there is an add-in for PowerPoint 2007 that allows you to save PPTs to PDF or XPS.

It took all of 3 minutes to download, install and save my 2007 .ppt to a PDF file. It even has *2* different ways of saving to PDF, one optimized for web and one for print. MS finally got something right!
